What is ADSL?
ADSL transforms a normal BT telephone line into a high speed broadband line. ADSL converts the line into a high speed connection faster than a traditional 56K dial-up modem. It is asymmetric in that it provides faster downloads than uploads. Our standard offering is ADSL Max which provides a downstream speed of up to 8 Mbps. At the same time, it provides an upstream speed of up to 832 Kbps (448 Kbps for home packages). This technology was rolled out to the majority of exchanges in April 2006. Whereas with general ADSL connections, where you usually sign up to a particular speed, eg 512k, 1Mb or 2Mb, ADSL Max will be a variable connection speed. This means that you sign up to an "up to 8 Mbps" service - and the length / quality of your phone line will determine how much speed you actually receive.
What is ADSL2+?
ADSL2+ is another type of ADSL, this time providing speeds of up to 24 Mbps. ADSL Max can only provide speeds of up to 8Mbps, thus to obtain anything faster, ADSL2+ is the only way to go. The ADSL2+ service is currently being rolled out across the UK and is only available in some areas. Full UK coverage is planned to be completed within a short space of time.
How does ADSL work?
ADSL operates over your normal telephone line. There is no need for new cables/wires to be installed underground outside to replace any exiting lines as these can be used.. ADSL modems optimise the existing copper telephone line to your existing lines to achieve much higher speeds. You are able to use your telephone while using ADSL through the use of a splitter that is all part of the package
Can I use the modem/router I have already
If you've already got a modem or router from another broadband service then this might work with our broadband. However, some broadband providers lock their routers so you can't use them with another provider's service so please check first with your current broadband provider.
How long will it take to get activated?
If you're switching your broadband from another provider:
your broadband will be activated within 5 - 10 working days from the date you signed up. However delays caused by the wholesale supplier and your old broadband provider can mean your move date may change.
If you're a new broadband customer: your broadband will be activated at least 5 working days from the date you signed up.
